FNB Stadium
The unique design of FNB Stadium—affectionately known as the “Calabash” or “African Pot”—was reconstructed for R3.3 billion in time for Africa’s first World Cup in 2010. Formerly Soccer City, the stadium has been the centre of historic events, from Nelson Mandela’s first speech after his release in 1990 to hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup final and the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations final.
It regularly hosts domestic football matches, including the Soweto derby, as well as international rugby clashes and record-breaking concerts by global stars like U2 and Lady Gaga. FNB Stadium also serves as a platform for major national moments, such as the funeral of Chris Hani (1993) and the memorial service for Mandela (2013).
