Maropeng Exhibition Centre

Maropeng, whose name means ‘returning to the place of origin’ in Setswana, is the official visitor centre for the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site declared in 2000. Its interactive exhibitions take visitors through millions of years of human evolution, including displays on the Homo naledi discovery, a ‘What Makes Us Human’ section and the ‘Pathway to Humanity’ walk-through experience. Beyond the exhibition centre, the site also runs a boutique hotel, restaurant and conference facilities, and has welcomed millions of visitors since opening in the early 2000s. Its striking, partly earth-covered building design and setting in the Magaliesburg hills make it as much a landmark as a museum, and a popular venue for functions and events on the West Rand.
